Abstract:
There are aspectually two dichotomies of predicates, namely,a distinction between states and events and a distinction between stage-level predicates and individual-level predicates. The two dichotomies of predicates are supported by sufficient linguistic facts and the explanatory requirement of these facts. That is because,on the one hand, each classification system of predicates has their own syntactic and semantic behavior systematically,on the other hand, only by such classifications can we better explain the linguistic facts.Based on the relevant data in Mandarin, this paper explores the rationality and applicability of theindividual-level predicates/stage-level predicatesdistinction from the perspective of event semantics.
