Abstract:
On the basis of proximizational approach to CDA (Chilton 2014), this paper pays more attention to the intentional motivation of proximizational representation and, in view of mental realism and attitudinal intentionality that addressers and addressees may possibly have, investigates how proximization is subjectively created and intersubjectively interpreted.A model, drawing on all these theoretical preliminaries, is then put forward to show the intention-oriented construction of proximization and is used to interpret three US and UK anti-terrorism speeches. This paper finds that: intentionality has a close relation with proximization; attitudinal intentionality provides a mentality-based interpretation to proximizational CDA; and proximization minimizes power in political discourse/text by playing down self-profile.
