Abstract:
Within the context of the debate between the serial view and the parallel view, the present study investigates the time course of language reformulation in the process of interpreting. We conducted a selfpaced reading experiment among student interpreters to compare the reading process of Chinese under two conditions: reading for repetition and reading for interpreting. In both reading processes, no facilitation of Chinese transliterated words but wrapup effect occurred, which indicates that the two comprehension processes are not essentially different. The result suggests that for the unbalanced ChineseEnglish bilinguals, source language comprehension and language reformulation may not proceed in a parallel but a serial fashion in ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting.
