Appraisal System and Translation Studies: Retrospect and Prospect

  • 摘要: 评价作为人际意义的核心成分,和概念意义、语篇意义相比,其处理在翻译中更具挑战性。基于功能语言学人际维度,21世纪发展建立的评价系统给语篇态度意义探究提供了具有较高原创性的分析框架,在翻译研究中得到了广泛应用。本文全面回顾了评价系统在不同类型文本翻译研究中的应用,主要包括文学翻译、新闻翻译和外交翻译领域,阐释了态度、介入和级差三个子系统在不同文本类型中的应用倾向及其意义变化所反映的语类规约、价值观念和意识形态等制约因素的影响。展望未来,本文认为学界需要拓展评价系统在学术翻译、口译研究和多模态翻译中的应用,同时借鉴和吸收语料库翻译学、批评话语分析以及认知翻译学等相邻学科的研究路径和成果。

     

    Abstract: Compared with the ideational meaning and the textual meaning, the evaluative meaning, a central part of the interpersonal meaning in any text, has posed more significant challenge to translation practice. As an SFL-informed analytical framework established in the new century which deals with attitudinal meanings in discourse, the original system of Appraisal has been extensively used in translation studies, mainly in the arenas of literary translation, news translation and diplomatic translation. This paper reviews the application of the Appraisal System in studies of the translation of different genres, elucidating how the three subsystems — Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation — tend to be employed across various genres and how the shifts in their meanings reflect the influence of constraining factors such as genre conventions, value orientations, and ideological considerations. Future research should extend the Appraisal System to such fields as academic translation, interpreting studies and multimodal translation studies, while borrowing the paradigms and ideas from corpus translatology, critical discourse analysis or cognitive translatology.
