Syntax-Semantics Mismatched Structure and the Topical Analysis

  • This study examines the syntaxsemantics mismatched structure via a topical analysis. After pointing out the theoretical deficiencies of previous analyses, the study finds out, however, that paraattributes in different syntactic positions embody different semantic relations. It is also proposed that the syntaxsemantics mismatched sentences such as “ta de toufa lide bucuo” and “ta shi qunian shengde haizi” form topic structures, in which “ta” is the topic while “de” and “shi” are basically topic markers. It is concluded that a topical analysis is helpful in distinguishing a syntaxsemantics mismatched structure from the “matched” one and in clearing the syntactic and semantic ambiguities.
