A Hundred Years of English Translation and Dissemination of Jingju: Retrospects and Prospects (1915—2022)

  • Jingju represents the epitome of China’s traditional arts, and its influence indirectly reflects the extent to which Chinese culture is accepted globally. Therefore, the translation and dissemination of Jingju is a significant strategic project. In the domestic translation community, scholars’ attention to this field still does not match its actual historical status and the richness of its practice. This paper provides an overview of the English translation and international dissemination of Jingju from 1915 to 2022, exploring the identity of translators, content forms, and scope of impact. The aim is to take stock of our resources, summarize past experiences in ‘going global’, analyse the status quo and issues involved, with the hope of further exploring innovative forms of dissemination and effective strategies for action, while maintaining the essence of our national culture.
