Abstract
In recent years, Mandarin dou is analyzed as a maximality operator, adding maximality into the stock of explanatory tools of Chinese semantics. This paper reviews the standard implementation of maximality in various domains (e.g., degrees, individuals and events) and explains how the notion can be applied to convey properties like definiteness and telicity. The paper also points out the differences among maximality, sum operation, maximizing effect and universal quantification.Based on a detailed analysis, the paper concludes that dou should not be treated as a maximality operator.
