Tendency of Embedded Mightiness in the Evaluative “V-de C” Clauses: A Systemic Functional Approach

  • Drawing on Systemic Functional Grammar, this paper investigates non-causative evaluative "V-de C" clauses. The research finds that this construction has the tendency of embedded mightiness. And the content before "de" is an event-centered embedded clause in the Predicate-orientated, which are participant roles of the whole clause with most relational processes. Moreover, "V-de" of the Subject-orientated, as a marker, indicates time sequence and shows cause in the objective logical order, so that the main experiential process of clause is formed by the content in the position of subject and supplement.Due to a degree of functional indeterminacy among certain ranks, the first "de" delimits it into different units with "V" as the realization of Predicate in the pre-embedded clause function. And the second "V-de" functions as preposition extension of Predicate to complete the meaning.
