Further Discussions on "Chinese Noun-verb Inclusion Hypothesis"

  • This article offers further comments on the Noun-verb Inclusion Hypothesis proposed by Professor Shen Jiaxuan. The main text is divided into four parts: 1) A comparison between Noun-verb Exclusion Theory and Noun-verb Inclusion Hypothesis; 2) an analysis of a possible predicate-noun inclusion hypothesis which is indicated by Noun-verb Inclusion Hypothesis; 3) a discussion of the Principle of Simplicity and two conditions: head expansion condition (HEC) and coordination condition (CC); 4) and the underlying loopholes in Noun-verb Inclusion Hypothesis. The theme of this article is that Noun-verb Inclusion Hypothesis should be considered more cautiously, and that Prof Shen is expected to propose specific operational processes rather than to argue repeatedly only from the theoretical point of view, if he wishes to hold his own ground.
