Abstract:
While the last two decades have witnessed rapid development of Construction Grammar both in international academia and in Chinese linguistics community, there are various problems relating to inconsistency of terminology, misreadings of Construction Grammar, vagueness of goals, explosion of constructions. Taking my cues from Michaelis (2024), this paper argues that Sign-Based Construction Grammar (SBCG) is an ideal tool for addressing the various problems. The paper outlines the basic goal of formalized construction grammar, the architecture and formalism of SBCG, and shows how the principle of strong lexicalism offers intriguing analyses of several phenomena in English and Chinese. Overall, the discussion boils down to the importance of “knowing your values” in construction grammar analyses.
