    Developing a Theoretical System of Compiling Foreign Language Textbooks for University Students in China

    The paper reports a theoretical system of compiling foreign language textbooks for university students in China generalized from my practical experiences.The system comprises of five major elements: 1) national and social requirements; 2) categories of cultures included in foreign language textbooks; 3) theories of foreign language teaching and learning; 4) characteristics of foreign language learners' growth; 5) management of compiling foreign language textbooks.The first element concerns with the direction for the other elements.The second element may decide the types of cultures included in textbooks which must be aligned with the first, the third and fourth elements.The third element centers on the rationale for designing learning activities and arranging them in order.The fourth element may provide the reasons why some themes are chosen and educational objectives are set up.The last element is related to the assurance of translating the above four elements into practice.These five elements each have their unique features and at the same time they are interconnected with each other.At the initial stage, these five elements are put into practice in order.Once the cycle of compiling foreign language textbooks starts, these five elements must work together.Only their joint force can ensure the high quality of foreign language textbooks.

    Foreign Language Materials Development: A New Approach to Teacher Professional Development

    Foreign language materials development and teacher professional development are the key to the success of higher foreign language education reform.Foreign language materials development not only plays an important role in achieving talent cultivation goals for students, but also has a facilitative effect on the professional development of foreign language teachers.This paper first explains the connotation of foreign language materials development, and points out that foreign language materials development has four main characteristics: value guidance, theoretical guidance, expert guidance, and technical guidance.Then, the facilitative effect of foreign language materials development on teacher professional development is discussed from the aspects of enhancing their professional knowledge, professional ability, moral character, and emotional identity.Finally, it is recommended to provide more training on dynamic and situational development of materials for foreign language teachers in the future.

    Chinese Foreign Language Textbooks Research from an Ecological Perspective

    FLT is an ecosystem, of which textbook development is one important link or component.Within the Chinese education system, textbooks are the means to achieve curriculum objectives.Textbooks not only embody curriculum requirements, flesh out curriculum content, and implement educational policies, but also offer vital support and resources for the students to acquire subject knowledge and develop key competencies. Hence, research on textbooks should not only concentrate on the nature and characteristics of textbooks, the guiding principles, underlying theories, and practical concerns in their development, but also reflect on the organizational processes involved in writing textbooks, and the actual use of textbooks in the classroom context.With an understanding of the ecological features of FLT, Chinese foreign language textbooks research should consider the interrelationships among different stakeholders at a macro-level, the criteria and standards for textbook development, evaluation, and consumption at a meso-level, and the components, content, and layout of textbooks at a micro-level.

    The Form-Meaning Relationship, Mechanism and Hierarchical System of Middle Construction: Based on the Perspective of Cross-language Comparison

    Based on the cross-language comparison, this paper discusses the form-meaning relationship, mechanism and hierarchical system of middle construction under the theory of Construction Grammar.Firstly, we extract two basic elements that form middle category, namely the inherent property and external force, and then summarize the form-meaning pair patterns of middle construction among Indo-European languages.Since middle construction is the integration of property-triggered event and action event, we reveal its dual information packaging mechanism with property-triggered event as foreground and action event as background, based on which we prove the structural rationale of middle construction that distinguishes itself from other related constructions.Finally, this paper establishes middle construction hierarchy systems in English and Chinese and compares their similarities and differences, thus providing a new thinking on the theoretical status of Chinese middle construction.

    Construal, Temporal Dimensionality and the Tense-aspect-modality Multifunctionality of Le

    This paper holds that the key reason for the complexity of the study of le may lie in its intricate relationship with the syntactic and discourse environment, which leads to the difficulty of distinguishing its proper meaning from the interactive meaning with the context, and that the "past" expressed by le can be construed into three different senses:"the inferred past", "the conceived past" and"the synchronized past".Hence, le is a multifunctional grammatical marker integrating tense, aspect and modality.This paper further argues that le expresses the internal time of events (aspect) through interaction with the syntactic and discourse environment, and the external time relationship (tense) of the event through interaction with temporal reference points into different "pasts", which can effectively account for those various "exceptional uses".The modality of le comes from temporality itself as a modality species.Besides, the tense and aspect marking model in Mandarin Chinese adopted in this paper can effectively explain such puzzles as sentence completion and categorization of le, etc.The unified account of the multifunctionality of tense-aspect-modality of le contributes to the economy of theoretical explanation and has important implications for language teaching.

    Application and Prospect of Cognitive Neuroscience in Russian Linguistics Research

    The study of language from the perspective of cognitive neuroscience is receiving increasing attention, but there is a notable lag in the accumulation and transformation of paradigms related to Russian linguistics in China.This article reviews the general research techniques of cognitive neuroscience and their application in linguistics, particularly in the field of Russian linguistics, and points out that the objective and precise measurement characteristics of cognitive neuroscience techniques can help overcome the current bottlenecks in Russian language research, address the existing shortcomings, and discover the cognitive features of the Russian language.Based on the current state of research, this study suggests that Russian linguistics should integrate cognitive neuroscience techniques to enhance and break new ground in areas such as Russian language itself, second language acquisition and teaching, pragmatic perception and emotional experience, and intelligent optimization of interlingual translation.The study constructs a framework for a cognitive-neuroscience approach to Russian linguistics research, and explores and anticipates its theoretical innovations and applications in the field of Russian linguistics.

    The Matthew Effect in L2 Word Learning from Humor Story Reading: The Rich Get Richer?

    The present study investigates whether the Matthew Effect exists in L2 vocabulary acquisition from humor-story reading by Chinese EFL learners, i.e., whether learners with a larger existing vocabulary size reap more benefits than learners with a smaller vocabulary size in the long-term vocabulary acquisition.Forty postgraduate students from a key university took part in the experiment.They first read 36 humor and 36 matching non-humor stories and then took an immediate posttest and a delayed posttest.The results indicated that the Matthew Effect existed in reading both the humor and non-humor stories, namely, the rich get richer.Learners with a larger existing vocabulary size and a better story comprehension ability reaped greater long-term vocabulary learning benefits.However, the Matthew Effect varied significantly across the two different story types.In humor-story reading, a threshold effect existed in that learners need to reach a threshold level of story comprehension ability before they can benefit from their existing vocabulary knowledge.In contrast, no such a threshold effect existed in non-humor story reading.

    Investigating the Diachronic Change of Literary Register Features Based on Chinese Translated and Original Corpora

    This study constructs a diachronic corpus of Chinese literary translated texts and original texts to investigate their dynamic correlation.Multivariate methods are employed to examine the macro lexical and grammatical features in the literary translated and original texts across five time periods.The study reveals the following findings: 1) From the perspective of the diachronic changes in multiple lexical and grammatical indicators, the changes in lexical features are greater than those in grammatical features, and the linguistic features of original Chinese texts undergo greater changes compared to those in translated texts.2) In comparison to the original Chinese texts, certain indicators of communicative functions show significant changes in translated Chinese texts, and individual case studies reveal their impact on the communicative functions in the original texts.3) The influence of translated Chinese texts on the original Chinese texts is not solely limited to literal translation: the "innovative" elements in translation also influence the original language.The paper elucidates the complexity of the mediation effect of translation, providing empirical support for the social-cognitive theoretical model currently being constructed in the academic community.

    The Generative and Developmental Logic of Medio-translatology

    Medio-translatology, constructed upon the framework of comparative literature theory, situates "translation" as its central object of inquiry from its inception.This approach examines the phenomenon of translation within a vast cross-cultural and interdisciplinary context.Over the course of its evolution, Medio-translatology has progressively shifted its research emphasis from the realms of comparative literature, literary translation, and the historical analysis of translated literary works, towards the realms encompassing cultural translation, translation services, and the establishment of the translation discipline.This shift has not only broadened the theoretical and research horizons of both Chinese and global comparative literature studies, but has also unveiled innovative avenues for the expansion of the field of translation studies.Adopting a perspective rooted in the evolution of the translation studies discipline, the authors undertake a systematic retrospective and prospective analysis to unveil the inherent generative and developmental logic.This endeavor bears significant theoretical and practical implications, serving to advance the discourse of translation studies in the contemporary landscape of China.

    Construction Path and Theoretical Significance of George Steiner’s "Translator" Model

    After Babel: Aspects of language and translation is an important work on language and translation presented by contemporary literary critic George Steiner.It has been widely recognized by scholars as a seminal work of translation studies that employs hermeneutic approaches.The mutual influence between translation studies and hermeneutics in this work lies not only in the methodological value of hermeneutics embodied in "four steps of translation", but also in the "translator" as a hermeneutic model which underscores the paradigmatic significance of translation to modern hermeneutics.Based on a contrapuntal reading of After Babel vis-à-vis modern hermeneutics works, this paper investigates the reasons for the construction of the "translator" model from three aspects, theoretical sources, hypothesizing, and perspectives on meaning, to uncover its theoretical significance in relation to understanding subject, hermeneutic motion, and hermeneutic task.

    Machine Translation Quality Assessment Based on Entropy Weight TOPSIS Method

    Translation quality assessment has become a hot topic in various fields, but the traditional qualitative analysis cannot meet the needs of diversified translation criteria.Therefore, it is necessary to screen different quality assessment indicators and establish an evaluated model to meet the comprehensive requirements.Three first-level indicators: fluency, accuracy, logicality, ten second-level indicators such as mistranslation, over-translation, and missing translation, and nine third-level indicators such as mistranslations in parts of speech and acronyms are selected to integrate the assessment criteria of words, sentences, and discourses into the framework of a multi-dimensional quality metrics (MQM), so as to build a more detailed and hierarchical translation quality assessment model.Based on the original features of the data, the entropy weight method is adopted to calculate the index weight, and the TOPSIS method is adopted to calculate the ranking of the mainstream neural network machine translation.Machine translation can optimize their systems based on the real-time feedback of post-editing.Human-computer interaction can be achieved by integrating the latest theories and research findings of linguistics, cognitive science, and natural language processing.

    English Naming and Translation Problems of University Names

    This paper examines issues concerning the English naming and translation of university names.The study reveals two predominant formats employed in university names: "X University" and "University of X".These formats are further classified based on the naming origins, namely location and non-location.Universities named after non-location usually adopt the "X University" format.For universities named after location, although grammatical rules endorse both formats, pragmatic principles give unconditional preference to the format of "University of X".Based on Kachru’s three concentric circles theory of English (1985), this paper identifies problems in the practice of university naming and translation, and subsequently provides practical suggestions for improvement.
